Some of the state's key industry groups have welcomed the posssibility of changes in key Government policy following the announcement of Premier Alan Carpenter's new 17-member Cabinet.

Although the new Cabinet is characterised by continuity in most major portfolio positions with senior ministers Eric Ripper, Jim McGinty, Alannah MacTiernan and Ljiljanna Ravlich all retaining their portfolios, changes in some controversial portfolios have lifted business hopes of policy review.

A number of new Ministers have taken on new or increased responsibilities in the Cabinet in a move the state's peak industry body the Chamber of Commerce and Industry believe will provide a new opportunity to revisit areas requiring policy attention.

A CCI spokesman said, "the appointments of strong people in new positions give us reason to believe we can review policy areas requiring attention with the Government, like industrial relations and the environment."

"We are also encouraged by the Premier retaining State Development and think that having John Bowler assisting in the role is a good outcome. We also believe he will bring a new energy to Government.

"There is a good balance in the new Cabinet and it is positive that senior figure like Eric Ripper and Jim McGinty have retained their roles."

The Chamber of Minerals and Energy commented that it was particularly pleased that the Premier had retained State Development, and expected him to continue his dynamic and responsive approach to the portfolio.

Tim Shanahan chief executive of the CME said, "the chamber of minerals and energy look forward to the Premier's continued leadership in the role."

"The Premier will also be ably assisted by John Bowler, who also has a thorough understanding of issues affecting the resources sector."

The small business sector appears to reserved judgment on Norm Marlborough's appointment to the Small Business portfolio.

Combined Small Business Alliance of WA chief executive Oliver Moon commented that it was hard to say at this point what Mr Marlborough would bring to the role.

"He will have to work hard to prove himself after the very strong representation we received from previous Minister John D'Orazio, whom small business hold in very high esteem," he said.

"This appointment does make us wonder what priority this Government places on small business."
