IGA opens $12m meat processing plant

Commerce Minister Simon O’Brien has officially opened a $12 million IGA meat processing centre in Canning Vale; a facility he says will give a significant boost to the local economy.

Mr O’Brien said the plant would employ 80 people directly and create further jobs in supply and distribution.

“More than 240 IGA businesses and another 20 independent retailers will benefit from this 2,500 square metre state-of-the-art meat processing facility.

“The parent company’s decision to establish a food processing centre at Canning Vale is a reflection of its commitment to this State and confidence in the commercial and agricultural sectors of our economy.”

The new facility will provide WA consumers with top quality produce while supporting local cattle farmers hit hard by the recent live export ban to Indonesia.

Lobbying by farmers and the State Government was instrumental in getting the Federal Government to eventually lift the ban.

The Minister said the opening of the Canning Vale plant was a good day for Western Australia’s vital meat industry, consumers and a company which was sending a strong message of support for WA beef, lamb and pork producers.
