Friday, 26 November, 2010 - 12:26

Thirty public housing units on the old Hollywood High School site in Nedlands have been finished and are ready for low-income families and individuals to move into.

The $5.3 million project was completed by RDC Construction and funded by the State Community Housing Investment Program.

There are 10 one bedroom units to cater for singles.

The remaining 20 two-bedroom units are suitable for families.

The units will be managed by the not-for-profit Access Housing Australia.

They will be occupied by tenants from the joint community housing and Department of Housing waitlists.

"We are working to build capacity in the community housing options for low income earning West Australians," said Housing Minister Bill Marmion.

"Working with community housing providers will help us to provide an additional 20,000 affordable housing options by 2020," he said.

Thirty new affordable units have been completed on the site of the former Hollywood High School site in Nedlands.

Visiting the Quadrangle Place development today, Housing Minister Bill Marmion said the new units would be available for low income earning singles and families who were experiencing housing stress.

"Ten of the units are one-bedroom to cater for singles, while the remaining 20 units have two bedrooms and are suitable for families," Mr Marmion said.

"The innovative design incorporates a variety of colours, brick work and building materials, as well as car parking located on site and concealed from the road."

The units will be managed by the not-for-profit Access Housing Australia Limited and occupied by tenants from the joint community housing and Department of Housing waitlists.

"We are working to build capacity in the community housing sector to assist with the provision of affordable housing after recommendations made in the 2009 Social Housing Taskforce Report," the Minister said.

"The State Government is focused on providing affordable housing options for low income earning West Australians.

"Working with community housing providers will help us to provide an additional 20,000 affordable housing options by 2020."

The $5.3million construction tender was awarded to RDC Constructions Pty Ltd.

The project has been funded under the State Community Housing Investment Program (SCHIP).

SCHIP was developed as a capital funding program to develop the social housing system through partnerships between the Department of Housing and growth providers in the community housing sector.

Completion of the Quadrangle Place development was held up after the March 2010 storm caused extensive internal and external damage to the property.
