A new tavern opening in East Perth in early September will add flavour to the area’s tasty line-up, as Julie-anne Sprague reports.

EAST Perth’s first tavern, the Bailey at Majestic, is due for completion in the early weeks of September and will join two restaurants, an ice cream and kebab outlet, and a chic coffee store in the area.

The Bailey at Majestic is a $3 million bar and brasserie development located in the South Cove complex and adjacent to the Majestic Quay apartment complex, both developments of the Mirvac Fini group.

The tavern investor and operator is publican Sonja Gastevich, and while she has had difficulties securing a liquor licence for the proposed $1.5 million development of the Bailey at Centro in Subiaco, it seems East Perth, and its years of redevelopment, has been an easier site to secure.

A Korean restaurant will feature in the Majestic Quay site later this year.

While the development team at Mirvac Fini was not about to drop names, Gusto can tell you that the operators are not ‘Albasios’, although Albasio Le Pegna (former operator of Funtastico and now Zafferano) did have a look at the restaurant sites.

A couple living in the East Perth area has secured a street frontage site for a coffee operation along the lines of the well-established Cino to Go.

Also joining the South Cove development will be operators of a restaurant/cafe with a large alfresco area.

The team at Little Creatures Brewery is renowned for hosting a good party. The Freo site gears up each year (though it’s not the same time each year) to put on a spectacle that attracts punters from far and wide.

Previous party themes have been ‘La Boheme’ and ‘Creatures of the Night’ and this year it is ‘La Bizarre Carnivale’.

The event’s taking place on the evening of June 5 and you can expect to see an abundance of revolving acts and dancers, carnival-style food from ‘street stands’, and plenty of good ale.

The lads at Little Creatures say the style of the evening is that of the ‘gypsy lifestyle’ and guests are encouraged to dress accordingly. Tickets are $39 and are available from Little Creatures.

A new Chinese restaurant has opened in East Perth. Located opposite the Perth Mint it is aptly named The Mint Asian Cafe.

In a rare occurrence for the industry, Perth restaurant Millioncino has secured a special facility licence without objection. The process has taken about four months, according to owner Mario Chiametti.

“We had no objections to the licence; we were really surprised. Even the girls at liquor licensing said we should expect to get two or three objections,” Mr Chiametti says.

Being at the bustling west end of town, Mr Chiametti believes business will continue to grow.

And spurring it along is the happy hour that takes place every night between 6pm and 7pm.

Panache Gourmet Food and Wine hosts a range of tasting and food/wine appreciation evenings and there are a few coming up that are worth a mention.

A coffee appreciation class, to be held by Craig McConville of the Yallingup Coffee Roasting Co, will take place on Tuesday May 20 from 7pm to 8pm, while Kate Fearn from MGM Distributors will present a wine appreciation class on Wednesday May 28 from 7pm to 8.30pm.

Up to a dozen wines from the MGM portfolio will be discussed.
