NEXTDC will expand its Malaga data centre with a five-storey building, after a development assessment panel greenlit the data storage company’s $56 million plan.

The Metro Outer Development Assessment Panel has approved NextDC’s expansion of its data centre on Malaga Drive.

The approval covers construction of a five-storey building for data halls and generators, a loading dock and a 38-bay carpark.

In the development application prepared by Urbis, the proposed expansion was estimated to cost $56.38 million.

“The proposed development is a significant investment that will further underpin the City of Swan and Perth’s role as the primary centre of commerce in Western Australia and boost its ability to attract and retain business within the area,” NextDC’s application reads.

“Malaga remains an excellent location for this infrastructure due to its proximity to critical network, power, and submarine data cable infrastructure.”

ASX-listed NextDC is a data storage and communications solutions provider and operates two centres in Perth, in Malaga and on Newcastle Street.

NextDC’s existing Malaga facility is a three storey data centre covering 8,166-square metres.

The recently-approved extension would operate in a similar manner to the existing centre, with the design to have a similar aesthetic, according to the application.

NextDC also operates data centres across Australia and internationally.

The company’s shares last traded at $17.70, up 1.37 per cent as of 11.50am AEST.
