Govt pledges $110m to the South West

The state government today announced funding to the tune of $110 million for projects in the state's South West to coincide with the regional cabinet meeting in Bunbury.

South West Regional TAFE (SWRC), Dalyellup College, the Bunbury timber jetty, Kingston primary school in Australind, the Bunbury port access road and 15 projects aimed at protecting natural resources were the beneficiaries of the funds.

SWRC received a $3.3 million boost to support apprentice training.

The centre now includes a plumbing and gas fitting workshop, mortar trades and plumbing sheds, two new classrooms and enhanced office and storage space. It is the only major facility of its kind in the region.

Dalyellup Primary School and Dalyellup Secondary College were amalgamated into Dalyellup college campus. The $27.1 million school opened its doors in February to nearly 1000 students and will be offering year 12 courses by 2013.

Dalyellup College has also been allocated a further $1.6 million for four new classrooms and $200,000 which the school intends to spend on new sporting facilities under the federal governments 'Building the Education Revolution' program

The state government also spent $12.5 million building Kingston Primary School in Australind. Education Minister Liz Constable officially opened the school today.

"The large number of young families building and moving into Kingston, Treendale and Binningup ensures Kingston Primary has a bright and prosperous future, "Dr Constable said.

The new school has 12 classrooms and three early childhood classrooms amongst their new facilities.

Meanwhile stage one of the Bunbury port access road project, worth $40.9 million and scheduled for completion by Christmas, is running on time and budget. Work is also scheduled to begin on the $3.5 million heritage structure Bunbury Timber Jetty, after it was separated from the overall Bunbury Waterfront project.

Fifteen environmental projects focused in the South -West of the State will receive $14.5 million in funding for their projects.

Making the announcement Minister for Agriculture and Food Terry Redman said the 15 projects to be funded tackle four key priority areas; biodiversity, biosecurity, water quality and management through land use planning.
