Got it covered: MARGARET River’s surf culture has led several local surf fanatics, such as the founder of helmet designer Gath Sports, to develop some of the best equipment for surfers sold worldwide. The Margaret River-based company’s latest product is the Gath Gedi helmet. Characterised by its close fit and high level of protection, the helmet can be worn for longer than most other helmets. It’s innovative design includes removable ear protectors, visors and peaks. Gath Sports sells 80 per cent of its products overseas, and was chosen to supply the national French lifeguard organisation as well as the national sea rescue of South Africa. The price of a Gath helmet varies from $120 to $170. On a tight leash: DUNSBOROUGH-BASED Creatures of Leisure is another WA company manufacturing state-ofthe- art surf equipment that has made it on the international stage. It specialises in board covers, leashes and deck grip, and sells its products in 23 countries. In addition to its Hi Lo design deck grip, Creatures of Leisure also developed a technology that helps reduce leash breakage. A leash generally cost about $40, and the Hi Lo deck grip $50. Stuck on you: MARGARET River also has its own wax manufacturer. Sticky Feet Surf Wax is manufactured by Margaret River Wax, with varieties to suit all surf climate and conditions. The range includes Icy Cold, Cold, Cool, Warm and Tropical at $15 each.
