PERTH-BASED environmental company GHEMS Holdings has been making successful inroads in the South-East Asian and Pacific regions with its mine rehabilitation work.

The Indonesian subsidiary of GHEMS Holdings was recently awarded a further two contracts at the Adaro Coal Mine in Kalimantan – the largest coal mine in the southern hemisphere – where it has been working for the past four years.

GHEMS is also contracting to international nickel miner Falconbridge on the start up of its Koniambo nickel mine in New Caledonia to provide sediment control and revegetation solutions.

The first contract at Adaro is a continuation of rehabilitation work at the Tutupan, Paringin and Gampa mine sites.

The work is scheduled for completion in April, however GHEMS is banking on more work at the operation.

The second is a consultancy contract to identify and cost-out community enterprise options from a new mine closure at Adaro, which is to be turned into a dam. The combined value of both contracts is estimated to be $400,000.

At Koniambo, GHEMS was awarded phase 1 of a three-month environmental and revegetation contract to the mine last October and was recently awarded the second part of the contract in January.

GHEMS managing director Greg Hill said the company was positioning itself for long-term project management at the mine, which was scheduled to operate for at least 25 years.
