The state government today announced an additional $11.8 million towards the redevelopment of Bunbury Hospital, in addition to the $11 million committed to the redevelopment in the state budget.

The government said the additional funding would deliver the construction of a new operating theatre, reconfiguration of the emergency department ‘Fastrack’ area, an acute medical assessment unit, a mental health observation area, and expanded capacity of the intensive care unit.

Extra funds will also go towards increased parking bays for the site.

The redevelopment of Bunbury Hospital, which opened in 1999, will enable more complex patients to be treated in Bunbury rather than being transferred to metropolitan hospitals, according to the government.

The upgrades are expected to get under way in the second half of next year.

Premier Mark McGowan said the funding injection would allow the government fast-track crucial additional upgrades to Bunbury Hospital, to meet the growing needs of Bunbury and the South West.

“It will streamline services to allow patients to be treated in a more timely manner, with a focus on contemporary models of care," he said.
