Australia's former treasurer has landed his first major role outside of politics after having briefly been linked to the AFL and a possible political comeback.

Mr Frydenberg lost his blue-ribbon seat of Kooyong in May following a tough campaign by eventual winner and 'teal' independent Monique Ryan.

He had previously served as treasurer and deputy Liberal leader between 2018 and 2021, and before that as energy minister in Malcom Turnbull's government.

After losing his seat, Mr Frydenberg had been briefly named as a potential replacement for Gillon McLachlan as the AFL's chief executive after he declined to rule himself out of contention for the job during a radio interview last month.

Liberal figures had also reportedly canvassed the prospect of either parachuting Mr Frydenberg into another federal seat or handing him preselection for a state seat ahead of Victoria's state election.

As of this morning, though, he appears to be on track to resume his banking career, having previously worked at Deutsche Bank, and join Goldman Sachs as a senior regional adviser for the Asia Pacific region.

Kevin Sneader, co-president of the bank's regional operations, said clients would benefit from the former treasurer's experience, with Mr Frydenberg in a statement saying he was pleased to join the multinational investment bank.

"I look forward to joining the team and contributing to the firm’s leadership, its global capability, and its strength of client franchise," he said.
