RESULTS of a recent business survey suggest 94 per cent of respondents intend to continue operating in Fremantle.

The Business Climate Survey, by Asset Research on behalf of the Fremantle City Council, canvassed 400 businesses within the eight suburbs of Fremantle.

The survey, which aimed to gauge how the business community was performing and its future expectations, found 37 per cent were optimistic of an increase in sales over the next twelve months.

However, 48 per cent believed sales would remain at current levels while 14 per cent believed sales would worsen.

Almost 90 per cent of businesses had suggestions for additional assistance from the council with 87 per cent suggesting a coordinated umbrella organisation to market Fremantle and 19 per cent perceiving the cost of parking as a barrier to future growth.

In addition, the survey found 85 per cent of survey participants thought the Internet would not affect their business in any way.

Newly appointed FCC economic development officer Sunita Price said the council was endeavouring to increase economic activity.

“Four years ago council provided no support to business. Today it has committed $140,000 to support business development in Fremantle,” Ms Price said.

The money will go toward a new Fremantle Marketing Promotion Centre set up with the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce and other key partners.

“The Business Climate Survey confirms that our concerns are in line with the business community and that we are heading in the right direction in addressing these concerns,” Ms Price said.
