Friday, 8 October, 2010 - 11:23

The first home sites in the new Perry Lakes redevelopment at Floreat will be auctioned in December.

Perry Lakes Stadium was the site of the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games.

The ageing athletics stadium and surrounding infrastructure is being demolished to make way for the development.

The on-site auction will include 17 blocks in the Garden Precinct, ranging in size from 308sqm to 739sqm.

More than 1,000 people have registered interest in purchasing lots in the redevelopment with the first lots to be auctioned at 10am on December 4.

Planning Minister John Day said,"The first land release in the Garden Precinct has been very much anticipated by purchasers and developers since this important urban infill project started almost four years ago."

The first home sites in the new Perry Lakes Redevelopment at Floreat will be auctioned in December.

Planning Minister John Day said the auction at 10am on Saturday, December 4, 2010 was a major milestone in the transformation of Perry Lakes Stadium into a modern housing development.

The on-site auction will include 17 blocks in the Garden Precinct, ranging in size from 308sqm to 739sqm.

"The first land release in the Garden Precinct has been very much anticipated by purchasers and developers since this important urban infill project started almost four years ago," Mr Day said.

"More than 1,000 people have registered interest in purchasing lots in this redevelopment, which will provide an alternative for families seeking to be part of an established community.

"Perry Lakes Stadium, built for the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, was a landmark sporting facility which is emerging as a landmark housing development. It reflects the site's heritage and the Floreat community."

The Minister said design guidelines would mean homes at Perry Lakes would incorporate the modernist style which was reflected in the stadium and other civic buildings of the time.

Since civil works started in January 2010, specialist landscapers have restored the edge of the East Lake, replacing weeds and exotic plants with native species.

"Timber seating from inside the athletics stadium has been recycled as boardwalks around the edge of East Lake so the whole community can enjoy its natural beauty and protect it at the same time," Mr Day said.

Since February 2006, LandCorp, on behalf of the Town of Cambridge, has taken the project through concept planning, extensive community and stakeholder consultation, structure planning and subdivision design.
