WA Health and Brookfield Multiplex say construction at the $2 billion Fiona Stanley Hospital in Murdoch is on time and on budget, as the project enters its second year.

A year on after the first concrete was poured, Brookfield Multiplex executive director for Fiona Stanley, Brad Sebbes said some aspects of the hospital's construction were ahead of schedule thanks to Perth's dry winter.

"The progress of the hospital has been phenomenal over the past 12 months, as those
who travel past the Murdoch site on a regular basis will know.," Mr Sebbes said in a statement.

"Only a year ago, the area was just flat land and now we have the basic structure of WA's largest state-of-the art hospital.

"The pathology building has already reached full height, as have areas of the main
hospital and construction on the new State rehabilitation service is due to start next month.

"It is very exciting for everyone involved, including staff and the local community."

One year on, Perth's latest hospital is progressing well

One year on from the day the first concrete was poured on the new Fiona Stanley
Hospital in Murdoch, project team members are delighted to reflect that the
construction is still firmly on time and on budget.

Executive Director of the $2 billion hospital, Brad Sebbes, says that the hard work of all
the team, both those working for WA Health and Managing Contractor Brookfield
Multiplex, and the dry winter has meant that some parts of the hospital are ahead of
schedule and that it is on track to open in 2014.

"The progress of the hospital has been phenomenal over the past 12 months, as those
who travel past the Murdoch site on a regular basis will know," Mr Sebbes said. Only a year ago, the area was just flat land and now we have the basic structure of WA's largest state-of-the
art hospital.

"The pathology building has already reached full height, as have areas of the main
hospital. Education is well underway and construction on the new State rehabilitation
service is due to start next month. It is very exciting for everyone involved, including
staff and the local community.

When it opens in 2014, the 783-bed Fiona Stanley Hospital will rank among the best in
Australia - a leader in clinical care, research and education, supported by an innovative
design that uses the latest scientific, technological and medical developments.

Services at Fiona Stanley Hospital will replace Fremantle Hospital's 24-hour
emergency care services for Perth's southern suburbs. The hospital will also have
dedicated buildings for education and pathology, mental health, administration and the
140-bed, Australian Government funded State rehabilitation service.
Services at the hospital will also include:

- full range of acute medical and surgical services
- State burns service
- state-of-the-art emergency care which will support a major trauma centre
- comprehensive cancer services including radiotherapy treatment facilities,
medical oncology and haematology
- renal transplantation and dialysis services
- mental health unit with a secure wing and a mother and baby unit
- obstetrics and neonatology services
- children and adolescent services
- facilities for pathology, bio-medical engineering and cell tissue manufacturing
- modern medical imaging centre to provide fast and accurate information to
clinicians
- A world-class medical research facility to be built on the site in conjunction with
WA universities and the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research.
