Engineering awards for WA

PROFESSIONAL services company GHD has won an award for its involvement in the prestigious Palm Islands project in the Middle East, as well as a somewhat lower-profile wastewater project, in this year’s Association of Consulting Engineers Australia (ACEA) excellence awards. GHD won four awards, among them a Gold Award for the Beenyup Wastewater Treatment Plant odour control and upgrade stage 2 in WA, where it was involved in a project to reconfigure the aeration system and install new sludge handling facilities. Among its three high commendations, GHD won an award for international/export projects with its Palm Islands activity. Located off Dubai, The Palms is the world’s biggest man-made island complex (and maybe the most costly bid for the tourist dollar), comprising three islands in the shape of palm trees. The project was commissioned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and will add 520 km of beaches to the city. GHD reviewed and updated the master plan for The Palms Jumeirah and developed the master plan and concept design for The Palm Jebel Ali, as well as other services for both projects. Curtin University student Luke Yanev also won an award for his project titled ‘The Terrorist Risk and its Cost Implications’.
