Elder named top WA senior

WALMAJARRI Elder Daisy Andrews from Fitzroy Crossing has been named Western Australian Senior of the Year.

She also won the Arts and Culture category award.

Ms Andrews worked with members of her community to set up the Karrayili Adult Education Centre in the Fitzroy Valley.

She is also an accomplished artist who has helped forge a thriving arts community in her region and is a strong advocate for retaining indigenous language and culture.

Dr Kenneth Collins of Mount Claremont won the Community Service Award.

Wenda Packard of Ardross won the Sport and Recreation Award.

Cue’s Jean Pigdon won the Business Leadership Award and Christine Gray of Dianella won the Award of Excellence.

Organisations and individuals were also recognised for their work in promoting the cause of seniors in the media through the Media Awards.

Today Tonight’s Miranda Miller won the electronic category, Eloise Dortch of The West Australian won the Print category and Alzheimer’s Australia WA Ltd won the Advertising category.
