Some of the State's best young students are recipients of The University of Western Australia-Fogarty Foundation Undergraduate Scholarships.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson said the scholarships were awarded to students who demonstrated significant academic potential together with a strong sense of community involvement and responsibility.

"I would again like to thank Mr Brett and Mrs Annie Fogarty who, through the Fogarty Foundation, continue to foster the attainment of excellence in learning and study among young Western Australians," Professor Robson said.

"The aim of the scholarships is to encourage students from Western Australia to pursue tertiary education at the university, and to actively participate and contribute to their local community - both throughout and on completion of their studies.

"It is particularly pleasing from our perspective that two recipients who were offered scholarships at a Victorian university chose instead to enrol and study at UWA."

Recipients of The UWA-Fogarty Foundation City Scholarship, which covers the up-front Student Contribution fees for the selected course and other ancillary costs up to $1000 per annum, are:

- Regan Bleechmore, Wonnerup;
- Stephanie Clugston, Dalkeith;
- Jee Yun Leung, Nedlands;
- James Lucas, City Beach;
- Christopher Mofflin, City Beach;
- Paul Reid, City Beach;
- Nicholas Van Bockxmeer, Nedlands; and
- Thomas Williams, Morley.

Recipients of The UWA-Fogarty Foundation Regional Scholarship, which covers the upfront Student Contribution fees for the selected course, accommodation fees at the University's hall of residence or, on approval, one of the other residential colleges affiliated with the University, and other approved ancillary costs to a maximum of $1000 per annum, are: Nicholas Gilbert, Kendenup; Jade Roberts, Ferguson; and Elliot Smith, Esperance.

Recipients of The UWA Vice Chancellors Awards of Distinction - a one-off award of $5000 given to students who demonstrate excellence not only in their academic studies but also in some other aspect of their lives, are: Andrew Gale, Scarborough; Monique Hollick, Booragoon; Kiran Phatak, Scarborough; Freya Shearer, Jane Brook; and Leon Smith, Wanneroo.

Australia's Group of Eight universities - a coalition of Australia's leading universities - offers four scholarships at each of the eight member universities to students with the drive and determination to achieve academically. The UWA scholarships are valued at $4000 per annum and have been awarded to Sean Chia, Rivervale; Hai Long Lam, Morley; a student who did not wish to be named; and Nelson Yiap, Canning Vale.
