AN EXERCISE to find an industry not backed by a WA university has led to the creation of a soon-to-be-exported degree course.
Edith Cowan University’s Bachelor of Science in Security will be taught in Singapore next year.
The course has already drawn a lot of external
students from the eastern states.
Course coordinator Clifton Smith is also working with the Nottingham-Trent University in the UK to set up a joint Master of Science degree in Security.
“From there we’ll be able to take the course into Europe and on to Canada,” Professor Smith said.
“We’ve also been asked to licence our program to Nottingham-Trent University,” he said.
“When we set the course up we were told it should be run in the eastern states. But we wanted to get into South East Asia.”
Professor Smith said since the course’s inception seven years ago, demand had been great.
“We run our course well over quota. Our undergraduates are split 50-50 between security industry members and school leavers.” he said.
The course teaches students to manage every aspect of security, from people to technology.
Mr Blades said there was a growing push for
professionalism in the security industry as more multinationals were coming to Australia.
“They are miles ahead of us in terms of security,” he said.
