Steve Douglas has been appointed as chief executive officer for the Mid-West Development Commission.

Mr Douglas has been acting in the role since April 2004 and his permanent appointment is for five years.

In announcing the appointment Mid-West Minister Kim Chance said that Mr Douglas offered a wealth of experience and leadership and that he looked forward to working with him to achieve economic and social outcomes for the region.

"His experience in managing projects and issues that affect the Mid-West will benefit greatly both the region and the community," Mr Chance said.

Mr Douglas joined the commission in 1995, initially preparing an economic development strategy for the Mid-West region, and then became principal project manager and subsequently assistant director.

His projects include the Gascoyne Murchison Outback Pathways, the Separation Point Marine Precinct, the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope, the Geraldton Boat Lifter and the implementation of the Mid-West Regional Development Scheme.

Mr Douglas' appointment has been welcomed by commission chairman Laurie Graham and the commission board.

"The board and I are looking forward to seeing the goals of the commission progressed through Mr Douglas' leadership," Mr Graham said.
