Doric wins city building contract

Construction contractor Doric has been selected by the City of Perth for its new public library project, which will be the City's largest construction commitment since the Perth Concert Hall was built in 1973.

The $33.3 million library building is part of the much larger Cathedral Square development, which also encompasses refurbishment of the Old Treasury Buildings on St Georges Tce and construction of a 33-level office tower.

The library building will cover 3,500 square metres and will be built on the site of the Law Chambers building, which has nearly been completely demolished.

Doric was selected from a short-list of six companies.

The building has been designed by Kerry Hill Architects.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the project "will add a fresh new dimension to the precinct while accentuating the heritage aspects of the historic buildings".

“The public plaza will provide an attractive outlook from the building as well as being a restful public place,” she said in a statement.

The public library project is estimated to be completed late next year.
