Doric wins $65m Yagan Square deal

Perth-based construction contractor Doric has been appointed to deliver the showpiece public plaza at the Perth City Link, Yagan Square.

Doric expects to be on site early in the New Year to start work on the one-hectare project, which will create a meeting place within the boundaries of the historic Horseshoe Bridge.

The contract is valued at around $65 million and is expected to be complete by early 2017.

The plaza, designed by Melbourne-based architects Lyons, will be designed to cater for events of up to 8,500 people and will feature an amphitheatre, fresh food market, native gardens and public art.

The state government announced in October it was also seeking up to 25 food and beverage operators for the plaza.

Planning Minister John Day said there was extensive consultation with the Whadjuk Working Party as well as the wider Perth community to ensure a unique space for the city.

“In addition to being a new city destination and events venue, Yagan Square will bring to life the iconic Horseshoe Bridge to tell the stories of the traditional owners and provide a unique markethall food and dining experience in the heart of the CBD,” he said.

Yagan Square is named after the great Noongar warrior who played a key part in early resistance to British settlement in Perth.

The plaza is designed to recognise the cultural and historical significance of the site.

Doric chief executive Vince Mulholland said the company was delighted to be involved with the project.
