Directors wary on new not-for-profits body

Not-for-profit directors have expressed concern the federal government's Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission will have little or no impact on the governance of community sector organisations when it starts operations on October 1.

About 80 per cent of NFP directors surveyed for the 2012 Directors Social Impact Study, conducted by Curtin University on behalf of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, said they were worried the proposed ACNC would not reduce red tape or improve financial reporting, recruitment of directors, compliance and the ability of their organisation to achieve its mission.

The study was completed before the federal government announcement in March it would delay the start of the commission's operations in order to develop better regulations in conjunction with the community sector.
