KUNUNURRA company JJ McDonald & Sons Engineering has won the $3 million contract to enlarge Wyndham’s 27 year old Moochalabra Dam.

Work on the dam, Wyndham’s major water source, will involve raising the existing embankment by 11 metres, tripling its current maximum storage.

Water Resources Minister Kim Hames said the total value of dam project, including works by the Water Corporation, was $4.4 million.

“The project will allow the Water Corporation to satisfy its existing customer needs as well as future urban and industry demands,” Dr Hames said.

“The original dam was built as an interim solution to Wyndham’s water supply needs. At the time, little was known of the future demographics of the town or the hydrology of the catchment area and the dam was constructed with only a ten year design life.

“Sound operation and maintenance of the dam has ensured it coped until now.”

The contractors are currently constructing a large dam on Palm Island off the Queensland coast.

They also completed the sealing of the road network in Kununurra for the first stage of the Ord River Irrigation scheme and recently won contracts for bridge works on the Halls Creek road and the surfacing of Wyndham airport.
