Roger Cook was sworn in as the 31st premier of Western Australia by governor Chris Dawson at Government House today.

Rita Saffioti was sworn in as deputy premier, becoming the first woman from the Labor Party to hold that position.

In his first speech after being officially sworn in as premier, Mr Cook took the time to praise his predecessor and affirm his commitment to WA.

“Days like today don’t come up very often. From Sir John Forrest to the honourable Mark McGowan, our state has had just 30 premiers,” Mr Cook said.

“We’d like to think that the last one was pretty damn good and we thank him for his extraordinary service.

“Over the last six years, I’ve been honoured to serve as deputy premier of WA and today is an honour of a lifetime to be sworn in as the 31st premier of WA.”

Mr Cook said this was a life undertaking that he would conduct with gratitude, care, and respect.

“Before me is a strong team that is ready to continue the hard work … to take our state forward on the issues that matter to WA, to look out for the most vulnerable members of our society, to maintain WA’s status as the most successful state in this country,” he said.

“We all gained valuable experience, skills and focus during six years as a government led by Mark McGowan.

“As the new premier, I inherit a strong economic position now and I inherit a strong and talented team."

The new members of Mr Cook's cabinet were also sworn in.

“It is a very experienced cabinet. Collectively, members of the cabinet have more than 200 years of experience in parliament," Mr Cook said.

Balcatta MLA David Michael has joined the cabinet, taking up the portfolio of ports, local government and road safety. He will also be the minister assisting the deputy premier, alongside Mirrabooka MLA Meredith Hammat.

Mr Cook said the expectations placed on the state government after the 2021 election win were fresh in his mind.

"The WA public has high expectations of their government so I say to you all, firstly, the positions you now hold are a rare privilege," he said.

"Secondly, remember all of of those who help us get here. Family, particularly. Staff, campaigners, union and our party leaders and friends.

"Lastly, always keep sight of where you set out on this path. We can always find common ground.

"We all want to continue making WA an even better place. That work never stops. So let's get started; let's get back to work."
