A joint venture between Multiplex Constructions and Perkins Builders has been contracted for main works of the Bunbury Regional Hospital's redevelopment project.

Announced by the state government on Thursday, the consortium will help facilitate the biggest redevelopment of a regional hospital in Western Australia's history.

As part of the project, the site will receive improved infrastructure, including expanded emergency department and mental health facilities.

In addition, Bunbury Regional Hospital will house regional WA's inaugural research, training and teaching centre.

Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said the announcement was another step forward for the project.

"Bunbury Regional Hospital is an important community healthcare hub for the entire region and the Cook government's investment will ensure it meets the needs of the South West community now and into the future."

Alongside Bunbury MLA Don Punch, Ms Sanderson then headed to the Bunbury Homemaker Centre, where she officially opened the new $7.1 million Community Infant, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service hub.

"I'm extremely pleased to see this new service launched in the South West, providing greater support to children, young people and their families experiencing mental health issues," she said.

"We know that timely access to assessment, care and specialty treatment for children and young people has a dramatic effect on their recovery.

"This new service model enhances the way clinicians work with children and their families and is designed to make care more accessible now and into the future."

In the past, South West families and residents often booked appointments in Perth to access various mental health services, due to lengthy wait times to see a general practitioner, counsellor or psychologist in the region.
