The state government says Perdaman Chemicals and Wesfarmers' Premier Coal are two potential customers for a new industrial park near Collie.

The 235ha Shotts Industrial Park, seven kilometres east of the town, has been approved by Lands Minister Brendon Grylls.

The land has been zoned 'special use' allowing the industrial development to go ahead.

"Shotts Industrial Park, a strategic industrial land project in the South-West, will be integral to growing Collie's future as an industrial and employment centre," he said.

"It will be the key available land in the region for downstream processing for the coal industry, increase capacity within the region and provide significant employment opportunities when fully developed," said Mr Grylls.

Perdaman Chemicals and Fertilisers is proposing a $3.5 billion coal and urea plant on 125ha.

Wesfarmers Premier Coal is also proposing a char plant on 55ha.

Mr Grylls said there will be three additional areas available for other industries.
