A joint venture comprising local engineering group Clough and Finnish corporation Wartsila has won a contract to build a power station in Papua New Guinea for an undisclosed sum.
The JV was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract by NiuPower – a partnership between Oil Search and Kumul Petroleum Holdings – for the development of a gas power station in Port Moresby.
The value of the contract was not disclosed.
“Clough has been working in Papua New Guinea for over 40 years now and as such we understand the need for this project to proceed,” Clough chief executive Peter Bennett said.
“This development will support the next phase in economic and industrial development across Papua New Guinea and we are delighted to play a role in that.”
The power station will use natural gas supplied by the PNG liquefied natural gas project to feed six high-efficiency reciprocating gas engines and generators.
It will produce 58 megawatts of base load power to the Port Moresby power grid through a new 66-kilovolt power line and substation network.
