West Perth-based ClearVue Technologies has launched the first commercial trial of its photovoltaic solar panel, with the glass structure installed at Warwick Grove shopping centre.

The existing glass atrium at the Vicinity Centres-owned shopping centre was replaced by ClearVue’s transparent panel, which collects infra-red light and deflects it to the surface edge where it is converted to electricity.

In a statement, Vicinity said it has committed to $73 million of investment in shopping centre solar across 22 centres in Australia, with a combined total capacity of 31 megawatts.

ClearVue executive chairman Victor Rosenberg said the Warwick Grove project was a major milestone for the company.

“It’s the first physical site where people can see ClearVue’s PV glass being used and performing in a commercial setting,” Mr Rosenberg said.

“It enables us to demonstrate the many benefits of ClearVue’s PV glass technology for building owners and operators.”

Vicinity Centres general manager Justin Mills said the PV glass reduces the company’s exposure to the volatile energy market, which is a key focus.

“We see great potential in trialling new technology, such as ClearVue’s PV glass, as we expand the solar program and innovation pipeline across our portfolio of shopping centres and as we explore mixed-use developments,” Mr Mills said.

Vicinity and ClearVue will monitor the trial at Warwick Grove, with the potential to explore other opportunities.
