Claremont North East precinct development to move forward

Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan today announced the State Government and the Town of Claremont had agreed to form a partnership to progress planning for a public transport oriented, urban renewal development in Claremont.

"The development area is around 12ha and will feature a combination of residential, mixed-use and commercial opportunities expected to yield approximately 430 new dwellings," Ms MacTiernan said.

"Intelligently planned infill developments such as this, close to a world-class public transport system, help address Perth's future growth without contributing to urban sprawl."

Ms MacTiernan said she was very pleased that this project, which involved redeveloping railway land and the perimeter of Claremont Oval, was finally making progress.

Town of Claremont mayor Peter Olson said in light of the high level of support from the community, the council was delighted to have the government's support for the development concept.

"Since listening to the community's views about the proposed development, the council can now feel confident the concept being advanced for detailed planning and other statutory approvals has wide support," he said.

"However, there are some aspects that need further clarification as they are of concern to community members."

Ms MacTiernan said she had asked LandCorp to now work with the Town of Claremont to undertake a range of feasibility studies including an overall site investigation and traffic studies.

The Town of Claremont commissioned the Urban Design Centre of WA in 2005 to conduct an independent assessment of development concepts for land north of the Claremont rail station and surrounding Claremont Oval.

The preferred option was released for public comment between late April and early June this year. More than 600 responses were received with the majority supporting the preferred concept

Ms MacTiernan said she was expecting a progress report on the planning and feasibility process before Christmas.
