City of Perth looks at City West revamp

The City of Perth has set the wheels in motion to redevelop a 7.4 hectare tract of land in West Perth, known as the Hamilton Precinct, for residential and commercial use.

The precinct is bounded by the Mitchell Freeway, Railway Street and Loftus Street in West Perth.

City of Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said enhancement of the north-western gateway to the CBD through introducing residential development would bring more life into the area.

The City of Perth recently completed a draft urban design study for the Hamilton Precinct, which currently comprises City West, Plaistowe Mews and a range of commercial businesses.

"With a total area of only 8.1 sq km in the City of Perth local government area, the use of pockets such as this is very important," Ms Scaffidi said in a statement.

"The city will work with land-owners in Hamilton Precinct on strategies to make it a more vibrant area.

"The council sees great opportunity for medium-density residential development along with well-planned commercial and mixed-use space."

Ms Scaffidi said the precinct was in an ideal location for residential and commercial expansion given its proximity to the City West railway station and the CBD.,

"Given its location, there would be an environmental benefit as well, with less dependence on cars.

"An important part of the draft Urban Design Study process is to engage with existing land-owners to ascertain their vision for the precinct.

"A public comment period will provide that opportunity."
