Children score with $5m for club sports

Up to 2,000 sporting clubs could benefit from a $5 million COVID-19 relief program announced by the state government today.

The Back to Sport Program consists of a series of subsidies and grants, which will be made available for eligible children and sports clubs and is aimed at re-engaging communities in sport as Western Australia recovers from COVID-19.

Through Lotterywest, $4 million will be allocated to the KidSport program, which offers financial assistance of up to $150 per calendar year towards club fees for eligible WA children.

According to the government, this will enable an additional 24,500 children, aged between five and 18 years whose family holds a valid Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, to access financial support towards returning to sport.

The remaining $1 million constitutes direct investment into community clubs registered with KidSport.

Those clubs can apply for a $500 subsidy towards volunteer support and engagement as well as purchasing equipment to support vulnerable participants and ensure COVID safety.

“The Back to Sport program will provide direct financial assistance to up to 2,000 KidSport clubs and tens of thousands of new KidSport program participants, getting more kids back into sport as seasons resume,” Premier Mark McGowan said.

Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray said the program would ensure children of families experiencing unforeseen COVID-19 related financial hardship can continue playing sport and enjoying the associated social, community and health benefits.

“I encourage all families who may have recently qualified for a Health Care Card to take advantage of this state government program and sign their kids up for their $150 KidSport voucher today,” he said.
