Chevron has announced its tenth offshore discovery in Australia over the past 18 months, with a significant Carnarvon Basin find that will feed into its $43 billion Gorgon natural gas project.

Chevron said it encountered a 74 metre gas column, 31m of which was found in an unexplored area of its Orthrus-2 well, located around 100 kilometres northwest of Barrow Island, where Gorgon is under construction.

Chevron Asia Pacific exploration and production president Jim Blackwell said the discovery would boost the energy giant's efforts to process 15 million tonnes of LNG from Gorgon annually.

"Our leading Carnarvon Basin leasehold and our accompanying exploration success help underpin further expansion opportunities on the Gorgon Project," Mr Blackwell said.

Chevron owns around 47 per cent in Gorgon and will operate the project, with global energy players Shell and Exxon owning 25 per cent each.
