South West brewer Cheeky Monkey Brewing Co has secured its first Perth venue after buying financially troubled Sound Brewing Co.

Rockingham brewery and restaurant Sound Brewing Co went into administration in September after facing financial difficulties.

In revealing the acquisition, Cheeky Monkey confirmed it would continue operating the venue under the Sound Brewing name in the short term, before rebranding to Cheeky Monkey Brewing Co in 2024.

The acquisition marks the South West brewer's first venue beyond the region, where it currently operates a brewpub in Wilyabrup and a taphouse in Vasse.

Cheeky Monkey director of operations Brendan Day said the brewer was committed to Western Australia’s local business landscape and community.

"Our approach in negotiating terms with the administrators of Sound Brewing Co was guided by this commitment, allowing us to retain all staff members during the transition phase and the upcoming liquor licence transfer," he said.

"We are setting our sights firmly on WA. The integration of Sound Brewing Co into our family is just the beginning.

“We are eager to bring our unique blend of high-quality products and exceptional service to more communities, reinforcing our belief in the power of local business and community engagement.”

Cheeky Monkey managing director Brent Burton said the brewery’s venues were the heart and soul of the business.

“This acquisition is a golden opportunity for people in Perth to engage with our brand and enjoy the 'cheeky' experience, which is all about sharing exceptional beverages and food with friends and loved ones,” he said.

Cheeky Monkey Brewing Co is the seventh biggest brewery in WA, according to Data & Insights.
