Chaney appointed new Supreme Court judge

Attorney General Christian Porter has today appointed Judge John Chaney to the Supreme Court of Western Australia and as president of the State Administrative Tribunal.

Judge Chaney replaces Justice Michael Barker, who recently took a post as a judge in the Perth Registry of the Federal Court of Australia.

"With broad experience across a variety of areas of law, Judge Chaney is a highly respected member of the judiciary," Mr Porter said.

Judge Chaney was appointed a judge of the District Court in April 2004 and has been the senior deputy president of the State Administrative Tribunal since November 2004.

After graduating from The University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Jurisprudence and a Bachelor of Laws, he was admitted as a barrister and solicitor with Northmore Hale Davy & Leake in 1977.

Judge Chaney became a partner at Northmore Hale Davy & Leake in 1980 and was managing partner between 1988 and 1990.

In July 1994, Judge Chaney began practising solely as a barrister and was appointed to Senior Counsel in 2001.

He had also served as a Commissioner of the District Court on three separate occasions before his appointment to that court.

Judge Chaney was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court and president of the State Administrative Tribunal on Tuesday, February 10.
