A six-storey storage facility will occupy 3,490 square metre lot on Pier Street after a panel approved the $33 million proposal.

The City of Perth Development Assessment Panel today unanimously approved National Storage's proposal to demolish the existing warehouse and build its six-storey facility on 220-224 Pier Street, north of McIver train station.

The development comprises 1,635 storage units across six storeys, a box shop, two commercial tenancy spaces, and associated parking bays.

“A lot of apartment building these days don’t have storage or have miniscule storage, so there is clearly a need here,” City of Perth councillor and panel member Brent Fleeton said.

The facility is proposed to be open 24-7 to users, according to the DAP report prepared by City of Perth officers.

“While an office or residential development may be considered to be more desirable in this location and further enhance the vibrancy of the area, the proposed storage facility will provide an essential service to the emerging residential population,” the report said.

“As such, the proposed mix of uses are considered to be consistent with the precinct statement of intent with the ground floor being designed to incorporate interactive street frontages, and the architectural detailing contributing positively to the streetscape.”

Business News previously reported that the site, bound by Pier and Nash streets, was sold for $12.1 million in October 2022.

The city’s DAP report described the site as "irregular-shaped".

A demolition permit over an unoccupied single storey brick and tile warehouse on the building on the site was issued last month.
