Celebrating success

After the enormous success of the inaugural WA Business News 40under40 Awards there’s a real buzz about this year’s event, according to WA Business News director Elton Swarts.

WA Business News launched the inaugural 40under40 Awards last year with the intention of unearthing the top 40 business owners or executives under the age of 40.

It proved to be an amazing quest, which produced many success stories. The 40under40 Awards aimed to engage the entire business community and to recognise those who might normally avoid the spotlight.

The awards focused on new talent and unearthed quiet achievers; there was an element of surprise and discovery.

The awards night at Fraser’s Function Centre was an amazing event and as complex to organise as the awards them-selves were to judge. It was a night of fun, laughter, emotion and anticipation.

The winners made the headlines and the news, and have continued to forge ahead, some winning additional business.

There was an overwhelming show of congratulations and support for the winners, including phone calls from Premier Geoff Gallop.

Some winners’ ISPs even crashed because of congratulatory emails.

Many of the inaugural 40under40 Award winners have received tremendous opportunities in the months since the awards.

Some have taken overseas opportunities, another has been invited to join the CBD marketing committee by the City of Perth, while another has been used as talent in TV commercials. The inaugural 40under40 Awards had a lasting impact.

One can be forgiven for thinking that, with 40 awards to present, there would be one for everybody.

Not quite. A total of 117 people nominated for the 2002 40under40 Awards. And to make the cut to determine the 40under40 Award winners the nine judges, who included four university academics, had to focus on the decimal points to make the hard decisions.

The event proved a defining moment in the history of WA Business News. It allowed us to promote what we publish every week – great WA business stories. It gave WA Business News another opportunity to champion WA business, inspire our staff and business community, and to celebrate business achievements.

Already young executives are knocking on the door, eager for the 2003 WA Business News 40under40 Awards nomination period to open. The entry form has been tweaked, with the input of last year’s judges, to put greater focus on a nominee’s entrepreneurial flair.

Nominations open on October 4 and close on the December 16 2002. More details and the entry form is available from the website www.40under40.com.au

The venue for this year’s awards night is the dazzling new Fremantle Maritime Museum.

The museum houses icons of WA’s spirit such as Australia II and Parry Endeavour, set in the backdrop of the working harbour, making it a natural choice to host the 40under40 gala awards night on the February 20 2003.

WA Business News and its sponsors invite you to nominate high achievers in the 40under40 Awards. Think about nominating one or more of your clients or even a supplier.

And those among you who are strategic may even nominate potential clients. Think about what that could lead to.

The 2003 40under40 Awards promise to be inspirational. We thank you for your leadership in identifying young WA business talent and enabling all to celebrate their success.
