Catering for a hungry public

Tuesday, 22 May, 2001 - 22:00
These days, many companies are using caterers to assist them organise a range of events, from product launches and breakfast seminars through to formal dinners.

Where do you start to look and what are you looking for when choosing a caterer? There is a huge number of quality caterers in Perth servicing a growing market looking for quality and something a little different.

How do you track down a caterer to help with your event? Besides letting your fingers do the walking, the Restaurant and Caterers Association has introduced an accreditation that recognises the professionalism that its members provide. The association introduced the ‘Gold Licence’ Caterer to help consumers in obtaining the services of a reputable caterer. It is one measure to help you, however word of mouth referrals are still among the best “proofs of the pudding”. Word of mouth, on reputation of satisfaction, is how I discovered the following.

Mustard Catering

Gate 7, Subiaco Road

Subiaco 9380 4099

Mustard Catering started in Perth about 20 years ago and has carved out an excellent reputation. Mustard’s award list would stretch around the ground at its home in the confines of Subiaco Oval. Such have been its achievements that Mustard was inducted into the American Express Hall of Fame in 1997.

Mustard caters for a range of functions, such as the Heineken Open, the football at Subiaco Oval, the Leeuwin Estate concert and, in the past, events such as the World Swimming Championships. Mustard also provides the catering for events staged at the Perth Zoo, Houghtons Winery and the Cottesloe Civic Centre. They also will cater for your next cocktail function at a wide range of venues, but you will need to have a minimum of 200 people on your ‘A’ list. Mustard are true professionals and offer very good advice, will help you in determining how much food wine you will need to sustain guests over the period of your function. For large functions away from their contracted sites these guys would be one of the best.

Beaumonde Catering

Unit 1/129 Broadway

Bassendean 9377 2947

Beaumonde Catering has been catering to the hospitality needs of Perth for many years. Since the business was formed in 1989, Mark Dimmitt and executive chef Gary Payne have established Beaumonde as one of the foremost caterers in Perth. Beaumonde Catering was recognised with the National Caterer of the year award in 1999 and followed up a succession of American Express awards with induction into the Caterers Hall of fame in 2000. Beaumonde Catering prides itself on its ability to produce quality foods with, where possible, local products, from White Rock Veal through to WA’s fantastic cheese. “Visiting chefs have enjoyed working with us because of the level of product we deliver,” Mark says.

Beaumonde specialises in outside catering for events from exclusive boardroom lunches and dinners for six through to formal sit-down dinners for a couple of hundred. The largest function they have undertaken was for 2000. Beaumonde’s reputation has been earned through innovative food choices and attention to detail.

In November 1999 Beaumonde Catering purchased the Room with a View Restaurant and created Altitude 9, a function venue with spectacular views over the Swan River, enabling the business to cater for weddings, corporate breakfasts, seminars and dinners in the heart of the CBD.

More innovation is to follow with introduction of their own olive oil and olives from their farm near York a little later this year.
