CTEC wins Hamersley Iron power deal

Perth-based energy and utilities contractor CTEC has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction contract for Hamersley Iron’s West Angelas power station project in the Pilbara.

The scope of works includes the design, supply and manufacture of two low emission open cycle gas turbine units with the capability of running on natural gas and diesel fuel.

“These gas turbines lead the push to reduce water consumption with their state of the art dry low nox system and low carbon emission profile whilst still maintaining a high level of efficiency,” managing director Neil Robinson said.

The project is part of Rio Tinto’s plans to increase its iron ore production capacity from the Pilbara to 333 million tonnes per year by 2013.

Mr Robinson said the West Angelas project was expected to create significant opportunities in the local economy through new jobs for local trades and contractors.

“In eight years, CTEC has grown from a small, one project company to a multimillion-dollar organisation with a global client base,” Nr Robinson said.

“This is due to not only technology development and the hard work of our staff, but also to the foresight of leading companies such as Rio Tinto, which look to combine the best home grown and global talent to further enhance WA’s resource industry.”
