CME pushes final week election agenda

The peak body for the state's mining and petroleum sector has called on the federal parties to support policies that secure the long-term international competitiveness of the industry.

"Our member companies are seeking certainty, so they can proceed with the next generation of resource projects, worth billions to the national economy," said Chamber of Minerals and Energy chief executive Mr Howard-Smith.

"A strong resource sector means sustained economic growth and jobs and opportunities for all Australians - something our political leaders need to recognise."

He said the priorities areas must be the Minerals Resource Rent Tax, labour supply, infrastructure and services, approvals and climate change.

On the MRRT the CME wants the effective exclusion of magnetite iron ore from the proposed tax and consideration of the impact of the tax on junior miner and explorers.

Mr Howard-Smith said Labour supply needs to be built up through strengthening the skilled migration program.

He said in dealing with climate change work must be done to ensure domestic action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is calibrated with global efforts and does not compromise the international competitiveness of Australia's trade exposed industries.

"We need political leadership that recognises these opportunities will only be maximised, with policies aimed at enhancing our international competitiveness, ensuring a steady supply of labour and an ongoing commitment to nation-building infrastructure."
