A prisoner in Casuarina Prison is the first person to be charged with making a false report to the Corruption and Crime Commission.

The DPP charged the man today under the Corruption and Crime Commission Act with making a false report knowing that the content of the report was false in a material respect.

The Commission's Acting Director of Operations, Rob Sutton, said the charges involved the alleged falsification of email and SMS messages to make allegations against a detective who had previously charged the prisoner.

He said making a false report to the Commission is a serious offence under the Act as it can adversely affect the reputation of the person against whom the allegation has been made and wastes considerable investigative resources.

Under the Act the offence can carry a penalty of up to three years imprisonment and a $60,000 fine.

The man will appear in Perth Magistrates Court on Wednesday 25 July
