WA firms in national awards
PERTH-based Pretzel Logic, Harvest Road and Select Multimedia have been nominated as finalists in the Australian Financial Review 2000 Australian Internet Awards. Pretzel Logic has been shortlisted for the Best E-Commerce (Business to Business) and Best E-Commerce (Business to Consumer) categories for its Australian Competitive Energy Supply and b-digital websites respectively. Harvest Road made it into the Best New Internet Application category for its website while Select Multimedia was named a finalist in the Best Arts and Cultural category for its Bangarra Dance Theatre website. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation is also a finalist for the awards. Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts Richard Alston said ABC Online was an excellent example of an educational and distinctly Australian website. The ABC was nominated for four websites, including HeadSpace and ABC News Online, in the category of Arts, Media, Multimedia/Broadcast and Sport.
Software benchmarks
THE INTERNATIONAL information and communications technology industry converged on Perth last week for an eight-day conference to develop and refine international standards for software engineering. Software Engineering Australia (WA) is the organiser and primary sponsor of the event. International benchmarks should be announced by the end of the conference. One of four working groups will soon finish compiling a capability profile of an organisation from data gathered from around the world. The model will act as the international benchmark to measure the capability of an organisation to develop software. The replacement of ISO 9000/3, the current international software standard, began at the conference. The remaining workgroups have worked towards revising, refining and agreeing on new standards that will affect the methods, practices and processes of systems lifecycle processes, software lifecycle processes, and process assessment.
RentSmart lauded
PERTH-based computer finance specialist RentSmart has been named Australian Business of the Year at the recent Australian Information Industry Association Awards. The company won the award for its online finance system that gives users access at any time to a finance approvals facility believed to be the only of its kind in Australia. Approvals for up to $15,000 in finance can be obtained without human intervention. RentSmart founder and managing director Ned Montarello said 10 months after launching the facility, 30 per cent of all the business processed by the company was completed automatically online. The company was also named a finalist in the Minister’s Award for Excellence.
AMX acquisition complete
AMX Resources has changed its name to Third Rail Limited having completed its acquisition of Third Rail Wireless Services Inc. and Amalgamated Network Systems Limited on September 13. Payment was made to the vendor of US$1.5 million together with the issue of 60,456,000 shares. A further payment of US$1.5 million and 56,583,000 shares will be made to the vendors of Third Rail Wireless Services Inc. upon satisfaction of the US Government Agency Contract Condition. Third Rail Australia is the holder of 74 Apparatus licences issued by the Australian Communications Authority to allow operation of wireless local loop (WLL) and Internet access equipment within the 3.4 GHz portion of the radio spectrum in Australia. WLL is a system that connects subscribers to the public and private communications networks using radio signals as a substitute for copper or fibre for all or part of the connection between the subscriber and the switch exchange.
