Artrage chief executive Sharon Burgess has announced she will step down from her role, having led the Northbridge-based arts not for profit since late 2019.

In a statement released this afternoon, Ms Burgess said she was proud to have led Artrage through some its toughest years during the pandemic and would be returning to her home country of Scotland.

It is unclear when Ms Burgess will officially leave the role, but is believed she will remain with the organisation until a new chief executive has been selected.

“These past few years have been immensely challenging for Artrage and the wider arts sector, and I am proud to have led Artrage through these years, proving our resilience and value,” Ms Burgess said.

“The pandemic years have taught us many lessons, and for me personally they have taught me that as much as I have cherished my work, my love for my home and family are even more important.

“I am excited to be heading home to Scotland, leaving Artrage in a strong position, and having made lifelong friends and incredible memories during my time in this brilliant and beautiful state.”

Ms Burgess joined Artrage, which produces the annual multi-arts fringe festival Fringe World and Rooftop Movies, in August 2019.

During her tenure, Ms Burgess oversaw the launch of Fringe Sunday Funday Supported by Lotterywest and expanded Artrage’s reach under the Artrage Projects banner and a new Artrage Philanthropy program.

Artrage chair Kyle Jeavons thanked Ms Burgess for her leadership.

“Sharon has put Artrage front and centre, positioning the organisation as a champion of independent arts for mainstream audiences," he said.

"We thank Sharon for her passion and her dedication, and we wish her many happy times ahead."

The announcement comes weeks after the 2023 Fringe Festival drew to a close.
