Broome Port marina proposed

A planned development of a boating marina in the Broome Port area has been put before the Broome Shire council after a meeting in the town last week.

Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the concept plan drafted by the port authority offered a possible solution to the problem of providing a safe haven for recreational vessels.

"The last study into this issue came up with a plan for Riddell Beach, but this was opposed by environmentalists and traditional land owners," Ms MacTiernan said.

"At this very early stage of discussions, I have asked the shire if they could see any fatal flaws in the marina concept plan at the Broome Port.

"The marina will incorporate tourism accommodation and recreational facilities.

"The shire is clearly interested in the idea and if they raise no objections and the community feedback is positive, we will start serious investigation of the proposal later in the year.

"The current feeling is that the idea put forward by the port is a much better proposal than the previous Riddell Beach plan."

The Minister said she would be meeting with the shire and Broome Port Authority in the coming months to discuss the issue again.
