Perth-based company Brierty has received a $13.5 million contract from the state government to widen the southbound section of the Kwinana Freeway from Armadale Road to Russell Road.

Assistant Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Jamie Briggs yesterday said the company had been contracted to build a third lane on the 3.5 kilometre-stretch of the freeway.

Construction on the new lane will begin in September, and is expected to reach completion by the middle of next year.

The new freeway widening announcement comes as a previous project to widen the freeway from Roe Highway to Armadale Road reaches its conclusion.

The work is expected to finish several months ahead of schedule when it is completed within the next few weeks.

Both projects are part of a larger $77.5 million joint state and federal project for improvements to the freeway, of which the federal government has contributed $61.9 million.
