COOK/book, Scott and Angie Taylor’s latest venture, which was previewed by Gusto in May, opened last week.

The siblings’ Highgate store is located opposite their cafe and gourmet produce outlet, Beaufort Street Wine Merchants, and is dedicated to paperbacks about food, while also selling kitchenware to help would-be chefs create the recipes.

Mr Taylor says about 30 per cent of the products offered at COOK/book can’t be found anywhere else in WA, which is largely thanks to his sister.

Ms Taylor hunted for products outside the usual wholesalers, including sources from Sydney and London.

One of Mr Taylor’s favourite books from the store is Tossed: 200 fast, fresh and fabulous salads by Jane Lawson.

He is also keen on the All-Clad cookware, which, is apparently also much loved by COOK/book’s next-door neighbour, Jackson’s head chef, Neal Jackson.

WA chardonnays stood out at the 2008 Sydney International Wine Competition with Palandri Vita Novus Chardonnay 2004 and the 2006 MadFish Chardonnay collecting a Blue-Gold medal and a top 100 placing.

The Sydney International Wine Competition is one of Australia’s major wine judging events and aims to single out and reward wines that best complement food.

On the other hand, the Macquarie 2007 Margaret River Wine Show awarded first prize in the chardonnay category to Devil’s Lair Chardonnay 2006, and to Evans & Tate’s The Reserve Chardonnay 2004 in the Museum Wine category.

Got a friend or family member who thinks they know everything about wine? Well, maybe you can help them get a certificate that shows off their expertise for Christmas by getting a voucher for a six-week ‘wine essentials’ course offered by the educational arm of the Wine Industry Association, The Wine Education Centre.

The centre provides gift vouchers that cover all of its courses.
