Barrack hotel given go ahead

Council has approved an application for a $13 million Barrack Square hotel development to be built over the Swan River.

The four-storey, three star Old Perth Port Hotel will be built on steel piles, twenty metres from the WA Rowing Club.

WA company Country Lodging Australia is behind the development which was knocked back in August last year because it was viewed as being too close to the heritage-listed WA Rowing Club.

The development is intended to merge with the existing architecture of adjacent buildings in terms of scale and design.

Amendments to the proposal since Council knocked back the plan last year include an increase in the number of hotel rooms from seventy-four to eighty-six, an increase from three levels to four and greater setback from Riverside Drive.

The final decision on the development lies with the Swan River Trust and Water Resources Minster Kim Hames.
