The future of the state's $1.1 billion stadium at Kitchener Park is still in doubt with Premier Colin Barnett refusing to give any commitments to the AFL when he meets with the chief later this week.

Plans for the 60,000 seat stadium are under review following the change of government with the Liberal-National government yet to decide on the stadium's fate.

Mr Barnett said he will ask AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou at a meeting on Friday on his thoughts on the two alternatives for the stadium; either a brand new oval or a progressive re-build of the existing Subiaco Oval.

He added that the location of the stadium will not change.

"I find it difficult, in my mind, to justify a billion dollars of tax payers money for an extra twenty thousand seats," Mr Barnett said.

"However no decision has been made and I don't rule that out.

"I doubt that Andrew Demetrious will offer to pay for the stadium or contribute substantially to it so I'll listen to their point of view but I don't expect any commitment or decision to come from that meeting."

Last month, Treasurer Troy Buswell ordered a review of all capital projects costing more than $20 million and could not guarantee that a new sporting stadium to replace Subiaco Oval would be quarantined.
