Mark Barnaba will become a co-deputy chair of board of directors at Fortescue

Fortescue Metals Group has appointed Mark Barnaba as the company’s new co-deputy chair, alongside Sharon Warburton.

Mr Barnaba will also continue as lead independent director and chair the audit and risk management committee at Fortescue

As the co-founder of Azure Capital, Mr Barnaba has extensive experience at board level including with UWA, Black Swan Theatre Company and Western Power among others.

Mr Barnaba was most recently global head of of natural resources for Macquarie Capital.

Fortescue chairman Andrew Forrest said Mr Barnaba added a breadth of knowledge to the company.

“Our board leads and empowers the whole Fortescue team as they set and deliver against true stretch targets to achieve our vision of being the world’s safest, lowest cost and most profitable iron ore producer,” he said.

Mr Barnaba was the recipient of the WA Citizen of the Year Award in industry and commerce in 2009, and in 2015 he was named a member in the general division of the Order of Australia for significant service to the investment banking and financial sectors, to business education, and to sporting and cultural organisations.

Mr Barnaba was named First Amongst Equals in the 2002 Business News 40under40 awards.
