BHP’s insurers were facing an expensive clean-up bill after one of its bulk carriers ran aground spilling 400 tonnes of fuel oil on the northern Tasmanian coast.
The collision with Hebe Reef near the Tamar River perforated two fuel tanks, releasing about 400 of the 550 tonnes of oil on board, according to reports.
Experts said the clean up costs could match those for the Kirki spill off WA in 1991, which cost $4 million.
