Perth-based BGC is Australia's largest residential builder according to the latest HIA-Colorbond steel Housing 100 Report.

BGC recorded 4,392 starts - an increase of 548 on the previous year.

The report ranks Australia's largest 100 residential builders based on the number of homes built each year.

There were WA builders ranked in the top 20 home builders, including Alcock/Brown-Neaves Group which was ranked second with 3,526 starts.

JWH Group was ranked sixth and Brookfield Multiplex was ranked 13th.

The Housing 100 builders report held an estimated 38 per cent share of Australia-wide housing starts last financial year, the same share as in 2008-09.

The share increased in Victoria and was steady in Queensland and Western Australia.

New South Wales and South Australia saw their market share reduce.

"The tripling of the federal First Home Owner's Grant for new homes, low interest rates and social housing programs saw a relatively strong recovery in housing starts in 2009-10," said HIA chief economist Dr Harley Dale.

Ten WA builders were ranked among the biggest movers in 2009-10, which ranks builders who increased their starts by 100 or more over the financial year.
