WESTERN Australia’s resources development and energy minister, Colin Barnett, announced the Argyle diamond mine in the state’s Kimberley region will be powered by the Ord Hydro-electricity scheme from this week. The project is a partnership between Pacific Hydro Ltd and Lend Lease Corp Ltd, which will supply Western Power with electricity at the mine for a minimum of seven years and the city of Kununurra for a period of 25 years. The water discharged from Lake Argyle will be converted into 15-megawatts of energy through a unit built at the base of the Lake Argyle dam wall. Mr Barnett said the power station would have the capacity to meet the forecast demand for power in the north-Kimberley for at least the next 30 years and would replace three existing power stations.
